Hello Glasgow!

Hello all!
It's been a busy time. On Thursday, I took the cheap mid-morning train back to Perth. It was strangely quiet - so much so that I don't believe I have ever been on a train journey like it. I had a driving lesson once I arrived, and headed to the computer place to see what I can do about the battery - it seems the only solution is to get another one from Dell or Amazon. Oh well. That's a problem for another day.
Friday was frustrating. I tried to get my art stuff back from my old school, but they couldn't find it. I also went in to get a new dress, but there weren't really any I liked. Anyway, I'm now in Glasgow at a rehearsal for a Celtic Connections concert. As per usual, we're about forty minutes late for sound check, and counting. The concert is sold out, so it should be good once everyone gets sorted out.

No poem today, but here's a picture from sound checks.

The Soldier's Return - Burns Night

Hello, all!
I'm having a little break at the moment. I've been deciding what I want to take with me to Glasgow to wear this weekend. Otherwise,it's been a quiet day.
I got my timetable for this new semester out, and it starts next week. I do have 3 lectures one after the other in a lecture theatre with no power sockets. My poor old laptop will barely last through 2, so I think I may be forking out for a spare battery if I can find one that will fit my dear old laptop (which incidentally works pretty well otherwise considering its older than a lot of the laptops/computers the rest of my family have which are having loads of problems). My laptop battery still lasts almost as long as it did when I bought it, so it's doing not bad, it just doesn't last long enough all on its own.

Anyway, I promised a Poem by Robert Burns for burns day, didn't I? Well here we are: the Soldiers Return. Technically it's a song, but I never heard it sung, so I just know it as a poem. And a beautiful one at that.

THE SOLDIERS RETURN

When wild war's deadly blast was blawn,
And gentle peace returning,
Wi' mony a sweet babe fatherless,
And mony a widow mourning;
I left the lines and tented field,
Where lang I'd been a lodger,
My humble knapsack a' my wealth,
A poor and honest sodger.

A leal, light heart was in my breast,
My hand unstain'd wi' plunder;
And for fair Scotia hame again,
I cheery on did wander:
I thought upon the banks o' Coil,
I thought upon my Nancy,
I thought upon the witching smile
That caught my youthful fancy.

At length I reach'd the bonie glen,
Where early life I sported;
I pass'd the mill and trysting thorn,
Where Nancy aft I courted:
Wha spied I but my ain dear maid,
Down by her mother's dwelling!
And turn'd me round to hide the flood
That in my een was swelling.

Wi' alter'd voice, quoth I, "Sweet lass,
Sweet as yon hawthorn's blossom,
O! happy, happy may he be,
That's dearest to thy bosom:
My purse is light, I've far to gang,
And fain would be thy lodger;
I've serv'd my king and country lang-
Take pity on a sodger."

Sae wistfully she gaz'd on me,
And lovelier was than ever;
Quo' she, "A sodger ance I lo'ed,
Forget him shall I never:
Our humble cot, and hamely fare,
Ye freely shall partake it;
That gallant badge-the dear cockade,
Ye're welcome for the sake o't."

She gaz'd-she redden'd like a rose -
Syne pale like only lily;
She sank within my arms, and cried,
"Art thou my ain dear Willie?"
"By him who made yon sun and sky!
By whom true love's regarded,
I am the man; and thus may still
True lovers be rewarded.

"The wars are o'er, and I'm come hame,
And find thee still true-hearted;
Tho' poor in gear, we're rich in love,
And mair we'se ne'er be parted."
Quo' she, "My grandsire left me gowd,
A mailen plenish'd fairly;
And come, my faithfu' sodger lad,
Thou'rt welcome to it dearly!"

For gold the merchant ploughs the main,
The farmer ploughs the manor;
But glory is the sodger's prize,
The sodger's wealth is honor:
The brave poor sodger ne'er despise,
Nor count him as a stranger;
Remember he's his country's stay,
In day and hour of danger.

I'm back again!

Hello. I have been away for a long time. I decided I should try out blogging again. I got a App for my phone, so I don't have an excuse not to write anymore, bar a blank-mind poetry-wise. I can apparently add photos too, but I need to figure that out first.
As an update for you all; I am now at University, working towards a degree in Biomedical Sciences. I turned 18 last week (I know, they say it's all down hill from here, right?). I believe last time I updated you all was the time of the UKs big snowfall in 2010. Can you believe it is now 2012? My very curious, and slightly superstitious side is waiting for December 21st to come around, whilst at the same time, my rational side is laughing at the thought. Either way, I think it's likely to be massively disappointing in the end.
Anyway, no poetry tonight, but Burns' Night is a-nearing here in Scotland. That means a few scottish Burns poems hopefully to come.
In other news, I'm heading off to Celtic connections this weekend. If I can figure out this photo thing, you may get pictures, and if my mind has settled down by then, some poetry to go with it.

And don't worry: the main point of my blog is still poetry-related, but there will be the occasional other life-related stories and such going on. Hopefully I can keep things lively.

Hey again

Long time no see, eh? Sorry i've not been on in a while, been a bit busy. Kept meaning to come on. It has been snowing like mad the last couple of days. We got snowed in today, so I thought I would update here. We have been having a phenomenon up here called thundersnow, where there is thunder and lightning, but with a blizzard instead of rain. It was really strange. Anyway, I've lately been listening to the Doors concerto, by Jaz Coleman and Kennedy, and it is amazingly beautiful. I wish I could write music like that. I have to invent some contrasting pieces for music this year, and it's just so hard. I managed to get a reasonable sounding piece for the first part, but now I have a week to finish off a 20th century serialist piece and I hate it. I can't do it. I mean I am trying my best and I have something down, but how can you write something, when you don't even like the general style of music. Mine sounds horrible, and I can't get any sense to come out of the rabble of noise. Everything is based around note rows, so every note has to be in order, and I can't just add one in if it sounds nice. Anyway a few days away from it all would be nice if the snow stays, but we'll see.

Rememberance service

We had our school rememberance service today,so I see it fitting to mention the poem "For the Fallen" of which the ode of remembrance is read.

They went with songs to the battle,they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

I hope you all had your 2 minutes silence today. If not please do so, and remember.

Busy days?

Busy day today? Sure was up here anyway. The place was buzzing and everybody was running around like headless chickens half the time. I can't figure out the concentration of ammonium molybdate I need for chemistry, though biology seems to be getting off good. Reprographics has my fiddle music. I need to think of base ideas for bag design and learn about my chosen designers for art. Dear me. Hardly time to stop and rest. Dunno what happened to the pigeons though, and the seagulls too. Tool this bus through town and there wasn't a single one in sight. Hmm...
Anyway, musings later. Poetry now.
This one is Fire and Water and was inspired by a picture I found on the Internet. Everything is connected. Don't worry if you don't understand the first time, it is meant to haves different meaning to people.

Little Flame against blank wall.
Oh, beauty!
The spark of power,
A wave of calm.
Lighting up dreary darkness and shutting out the fears,
Ruby red and cobalt blue.
And life goes on,
Like a cloud on the horizon,
Mysterious, and obvious,
As fast as the wind can carry it.
There is beauty in a flame,
And wisdom in a raindrop,
And if only one but listens very carefully,
A whim of a whisper may reach out.
Water and fire.
Water destroys fire destroys water.
Water creates fire creates water.
Both eternally linked.
And somewhere in the clouds,
An angel sings.

Enjoy!

Hey Everyone

Hi guys. First log in to my new blog. I'm Tigereye.
I love writing, especially poetry, so I thought i would give you a little piece to start us off. I called it Drowning.

I jumped into the water a while ago,
unknowingly.
Spluttering, coughing,
A weight pulls me down,
And I struggle against it.
The bottom too far below
For me to get any support,
Solid ground too far away
For me to reach
The wieght pulls,
I pull,
It pulls.
I can only stay afloat for as long as possible
And hope to be saved
By that one who will piece together my shattered heart
And give me something to fight for,
Because I am drowning in tears
And death stands at my front door,
Laughing.
And yet,
I know he cannot take me too.

What do you think? Don't worry, they aren't all depressing. That was just one of my favourites that I have written so far. Anyway, hopefully Moonlit Summers isn't all going to be about poetry. I'll probably put up some thoughts on random subjects as time goes by. I'll try and update soon. Bye for now.
